Eve and Wall-E Pumpkins
I love this time of year.
So, apparently people are upset that Google didn't mark the anniversary of 9/11, while other search engines did. I really, really don't understand this. Google's schtick has always been to change their logo into a whimsical salute to whatever offbeat/quirky/fun/geeky/scientific/cult
I personally can't think of a way they could alter their logo to encompass the cultural and emotional weight of that day that wouldn't be either offensive to many, or so inoffensive as to be completely meaningless. I don't blame them for not trying.
Well, this was a weekend of trials and tribulations. I finished the silver skirt I wanted to (except for the hem, I need help marking that).
But then I got cocky...I tried my first sleeve. I hemmed the sleeves flat, then sewed them into the armholes, then sewed up the side seam and down the sleeve. Tried it on, patted myself on the back for a job well done, and hemmed the bottom hem. Sigh. And then noticed one sleeve was inside out :-\ Doh. At least I noticed before I wore it to work. I can't rip all that out now, so I'm going to try and cut off the hems and redo them, making the sleeves shorter. Luckily, the fabric is a knit, and I can't tell the right side from the wrong side anyhow....
On the other hand, I found a picture I'm going to use as inspiration for all my color choices: Pretty leaves
I used Photoshop to pull out the colors into swatches:
I think I'm drawn to that painting because I already love a lot of these colors and wear them often, but I think it'll help give me more focus, and suggest a few colors I haven't considered before.
I joined a sew-a-long for a 6 piece wardrobe by fall, but I'm aiming for double that, so we'll see. Here are my two plans:
so plan 1 for fall:
3 skirts - brown, green, burgundy
3 tops - brown, burgundy, cream/tan
and plan 2 (winter?):
3 skirts - silver, blue, black
3 tops - silver/grey, blue, rose
It's skirt heavy for three reasons--skirts are easy, I love to wear them, and I don't have many that I like. Besides, I have many pairs of jeans and pants that fit and that I like.
I've started a new quilt (queen size) that I hope to finish by Christmas. It won't really be quilted; I don't have the patience for that, and S likes his bed covers "puffy". Still, this thing is going to be massive. I have no idea where I'm going to find room to spread it out for layering.
Here's a rough idea of what it'll look like:
To get this image, I laid out about 15 blocks on the floor, took a halfway decent photo, then cropped and tiled that. The colors are a lot darker in person, so IMO this won't seem so busy as it does in the mockup.
I feel so productive! My new skirt has a few flaws, but I'm happy enough with it to wear out and about. I have some pretty rose pink knit on the way that might go nicely with this skirt.
(I don't normally hike up my top, I just wanted to show the back of the skirt)
I actually sewed something I like! As my husband says, it almost looks store bought.
I bought enough fabric to make at least three more.
This is how I need to start thinking of things:
"I don’t want it to be that if I eat healthy and exercise but don’t lose weight, that I’ve failed. I want it to be that if I eat nutritious food and exercise regularly, I’ve succeeded, whether I lose weight or not." See post here (great blog in general, by the way)
I'm posting that to remind myself where I really need to focus my thoughts.
I made strawberry jam today from berries I picked myself. It's the first time I've made it all on my own (I used to stir the pot for Mom...), and I'm sitting in here listening to the lids POP as they seal and giggling with each one. I wasn't completely convinced that I could do it, and it was an amateurish effort, but those pops mean that I may have home made strawberry jam to eat this winter. Yay!
Queen of Wands on ebay. Tempting. I love the kitty strips, and I've had the tech support one hanging up in every cube I've had.
I slept sooooooo well last night. The night before I woke up 4 times, and once I was so itchy I thought I must be getting a rash. So last night, I took an antihistamine before going to bed, and voila, 7 hours of solid sleep. And no itchiness and no sniffling in the morning. Guess it's time to admit that I do have allergies.

I have purse pattern ideas floating around in my head...but I need a protractor to draw them out. This may mean a trip to the campus bookstore at lunch. I mean, I know I have one somewhere, but I don't want to wait.
So I dropped my WoW account for a bit. It got boring again, and even Scott wasn't playing, so I was lonely. We gave LotR Online a try, and that looks pretty cool, so I guess I'll be playing that for awhile. It's an awful lot like WoW, but the new character classes are a lot of fun, and I got to run around Bag End like I was thinking of buying the place :-D
I have an Ubuntu server! I'm sooooo thrilled. Now I just have to figure out how to use the thing. I took
bugfish's advice and installed the desktop over the server, and that's easy enough to use--just boot up. But how do I access the server piece?
Must work on homework before I can play, must work on homework before I can play...
A new bit of javascript code. Normally I'd separate out the css, js, and html, but I was putting together this demo for a coworker who's new to all this.
So here's the Spitfire kit I bought myself the other day. I'm so excited. I've never put together a model before, but it doesn't look too bad. I need to buy some sand paper. I should probably not be set loose in Hobby stores. It was all I could do not to bring home a train set or an RC car.
Want! So cute
Seriously, I realize many of my journal posts are about shopping...it's a convenient place to record my non-Amazon wishlist stuff :-) And this t-shirt is too cute not to share.
On a related note, I'm reading the entire backlog of Questionable Content comics. Recent discovery for me, and I LOOOOVE it. One of the characters reminds me of one of my friends. I'll leave ya'll to guess who reminds me of whom (lol, might be an interesting Rorshach test)
Well, this makes the trekkie in me giggle with glee. I love that website; it's just too bad I don't wear t-shirts much anymore.
I can't decide how to finish this quilt. It's sat for a year now, waiting for me to make up my mind. What do ya'll think?
The pictures below show some border options I'm auditioning, but they don't seem right, somehow.
I'm thinking of just taking the whole top to a fabric store and looking for an eye-popping fabric for a border. But I just can't decide.

For today's potluck, I bring you Apple Sauce Bars
I made homemade apple sauce to use in these, so double Yumm. I'll have that for lunch for a few days. I love homemade apple sauce SOOOO much, I can't believe I've gone that long without making it.
Amazing, creative giftwrapping
(somehow I can SO see
bugfish getting into this)
